a hoarder. >> we are still trying to make it through the house. >> reporter: so far they have found a lot of material that could be used to make bombs. our cameras spotted these liquid chemicals in the backyard this morning just as the bomb squad arrived with a specialized containment trick to take away an explosive device they found in the house. officers say they don't know what they will find next. >> every time you open anything and look, you take a deep breath, okay, here we go. keep goin. >> reporter: on tuesday night the bomb squad blew up some material. >> we are concerned. >> reporter: people who live in this quiet santa clara neighborhood watch it with amazement. >> we want to see the end of it so we can continue our lives. >> reporter: this is the home of 45-year-old everett basham in jail accused of sending death threats to state senator leland yee.

basham is an engineer by trade, reclusive. his roof is covered with antennae and surveillance cameras and in this case that threat may have saved many people from harm. we're fortunate how things have turned out. >> reporter: we did hear from the subject of that threat, state senator leland yee. he spoke to the media this morning in san francisco. >> details in a specific way with weapons he possesses and how he was going to kill me. the threat was unlike any other that i have ever received. neither this threat for any other threat will deter me from addressing issues around gun violence. >> reporter: he is talking about senate bill 47, his push to close a loophole in

california's assault weapon ban, the bullet button, exposed by kpix 5 last year which alerted him to bring forth the bill. we'll have an interview with him tonight on kpix 5 news. live in santa clara, anne makovec, kpix 5. a san leandro elementary school is closed after a young man was found shot on campus last night. the victim died at the hospital later. now police are looking for a murder suspect and motive. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san leandro with the latest. >> reporter: good afternoon. investigators have collected the evidence they need here from hillside elementary school. now they are going to follow up on leads to help them figure out how a young man was shot and killed here last night. dave heard the gunshots and later found out the young man killed was his neighbor. >> we see the young man every now and then walking by here. so i could tell my girl, i said, you know, so crazy, you see one person one day and don't see him the next. >> reporter: this happened just before 9:00 last night.

deputies got calls of shots at hillside elementary. >> when deputies got here a man had a gunshot wound. he was transported to eden hospital in castro valley where he died later. >> reporter: at first light deputies wasted no time trying to come through hillside elementary school looking for evidence and a possible murder weapon. >> we didn't want to have a situation where the kids are playing on the grounds and find something they shouldn't find so we are erring on the side of caution. >> reporter: they pulled out all the stops bringing out a k- 9 unit and the alameda fire department to use ladders to make sure no weapons were tossed on the roof. school leaders cooperated by shutting class down for the day. >> we do hear a lot about violence on campus. but within our control, we do everything we can to keep the students safe and it is a priority in our minds. >> reporter: they will have a crisis intervention team for students and class will continue tomorrow for hillside elementary. some neighbors say they still will be on alert. we spoke to mark, who moved

here three months ago to find a better place to live. >> we're deciding maybe this is not the area for us after all. >> reporter: what do you think you'll do now? >> we are going to keep our child in the same school that she's in for the time being and we might consider moving to a different area. >> reporter: after the victim's identity, i spoke with the alameda county coroner's office who say they are not yet releasing that information. reporting live in san leandro, back to you. >> thank you. meanwhile a gang fight may have led to a deadly stabbing near san jose high school yesterday. officers say someone stabbed a teenage boy on north 21st street yesterday just minutes before class got out just a few blocks away from a high school. the stabbing is san jose's fifth homicide of the year. paralympic superstar oscar pistorius is charged with the murder of his girlfriend, model reeva steenkamp found shot to death inside his home in south

day! you get mrs. boehner for valentine's day? [ laughter ] >> how about that. politicians puckering up in public only on valentine's day. >> yes. at a news conference in washington, d.c., this morning, house speaker john boehner indicated he gave his wife a kiss maybe two or three for valentine's day. >> i think that was three actually. from kisses to flowers to expensive gifts, valentine's day apparently is a day for love and money. >> and money in a big way. 62% of adults say they celebrate the holiday. the average person will spend 130 bucks on their honey but men are the bigger spenders, shelling out between 150 and 1 $75. big business, $18 billion spent on valentine's day alone. >> do you want flowers?

these, too, as well. happy valentine's day! roberta gonzales with mobile weather in san francisco for kpix 5. have you ever had a hot fudge sundae at ghirardelli? >> yes, excellent! >> decadence! >> i hope she brings chocolates back. >> did you bring back flowers? >> i like those bordeauxes. those are super. really good. some great weather coming our way on valentine's day. lots of sunshine and the temperatures heating up well above average. started out with dense fog early on but that's long gone now. looking good over the bay and the temperatures just beginning to pop quite a bit outside. in fact, it's going to be a fantastic afternoon. 64 degrees in san jose now. 61 in san francisco. and 63 degrees in concord. some of these temperatures could sneak into the low 70s. looking back toward the city of san francisco, we have lots of sunshine coming our way am a little hazy outside. tonight we'll stay mostly clear. we have an offshore wind. and then staying dry for now but that could change in the long-range forecast. these temperatures still running above the average. high pressure sliding in across

our skies. you're getting that offshore wind developing keeping things very mild outside with above average temperatures and some highs into the upper 60s and low 70s. i think around the state today around 70 in sacramento 66 in monterey bay, 40s and 50s in the napa valley. then inside the bay today, it looks like temperatures running up to about 69 in san jose. 70 in los gatos. about 62 degrees in pacifica. maybe some down slope winds and about 67 degrees in half moon bay. east bay temperatures yellows beginning to show up 70s in places like fairfield, 71 in the napa valley, 69 in pleasanton, and 67 degrees in livermore. 60s and 70s around the bay. a little hazecy but looking good. and staying that way. tonight going to be cold in spots. 30s and 40s for overnight lows but mostly clear and looking out over the next few days, dry. tomorrow almost a carbon copy, lots of sunshine for the weekend although we cool down. chance of showers returns to the bay area on tuesday.

[ laughter ] >> okay. lawrence, thank you. >> glad we cleared upper deck. in healthwatch, a woman's blood may hold clues as to whether she is at an increased risk for memory problems after menopause. research from the mayo clinic found some women with platelets in their blood that may cause clods leading to brain damage after menopause which causes the memory loss. and it turns out longer lower intensity workouts may be better for you than short intense ones. researchers in the netherlands compared people who exercise vigorously for an hour each day to people who stood or walked for longer periods as long as they burned the same amount of energy. there you go. baby spinach being recalled over a possible e. coli contamination. so far no one is reported

are this week's well, if you have seen large groups of people suddenly break into synchronized dance on bay area streets, chances are this week's jefferson award winner is at the head of that pack. kpix 5 reporter sharon chin went to the dance studio to meet him. deo. ♪[ music ]♪ >> reporter: it looks like practice for a music video but the dancers aren't professionals. >> doing it in front of a crowd, i mean, its awesome. you surprise yourself. >> reporter: with julien rey, their teacher and choreographer, students are learning a lady gaga routine. the group is the bay area flash mob. it's dancers dazzling audiences in public plazas and step up for nonprofit fundraisers.

>> don't have to be a professional or great dancer to do it. you can just try to learn it and join it and see what happens. >> reporter: for julien, the thrill of teaching was a tribute to michael jackson. it was called thrill the world. flash mobs around the globe performed the same routine simultaneously in 2009 to honor the late king of pop. julien had such a great time dancing he and four other participants co-founded bay area flash mob that same year. >> we wanted to share the love with as many people as we can. >> reporter: every two months he leads a new street performance. they also have fundraisers that benefit charities like bay area children shelters, music programs and the american cancer society. >> the biggest reward is to see people smile during the class

and the actual flash mob. >> reporter: when julien isn't working full time as a software engineer he is usually leading two-hour flash mob classes for free at a studio in san francisco south of market. >> one, two, three. >> reporter: in videos and in class, he breaks down the routine into manageable steps for some 1500 flash mob members. many of them first time dance students like reena patel. >> he is amazing. he puts a lot of his life and time into it. >> reporter: julien says he once had an overly critical teacher who crushed his spirit, so he tries to be a compassionate coach. his cofounder says he definitely sets the tempo. >> enthusiasm and the energy just makes everybody, you know, really happy, you know? >> reporter: so for tirelessly sharing his passion for dancing, this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to julien rey. sharon chin, kpix 5.
